Chances are it’s not a very polite word. Which is strange, really. Because of all
the dull things we do at work, writing shouldn’t be one of them.

Words can build strong relationships, bring ideas to life, inspire, persuade and
engage people. But so often the default setting for business writing is formal,
complex and bland. And if we’re honest, we’re all guilty of it from time to time.

That’s why we set up The First Word. To break business writers out of bad
